Bio
A name synonymous with Morningside, and the athletic department, A.W. “Buck” Buckingham charted an illustrious career with his alma mater as a player, coach, and administrator. The Westfield, Iowa native played football, and basketball for the Maroons for four years, earning All-NCC honors in football in 1938.
After coaching high school, and serving in the US Navy in World War II, Buck began a 48-year association with Morningside in 1945. His various roles included director of physical education, and athletics, assistant football coach (for George Allen), director of public relations, and vice president of estate planning. For 12 seasons, Buckingham served as head basketball coach, compiling an overall 158-124 record, two North Central Conference championships (1947, and 1951), and a deep run in the 1952 National Intercollegiate Association Basketball championship, where the Maroons defeated Eastern Illinois, and Pepperdine en route to a quarterfinal appearance.
Buck was a member of the US Olympic Board for 20 years, and was an executive for the World University, and Pan American Games for many years. He is one of five Morningsiders to be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.
