Bio

A dual-sport athlete from Linn Grove, Dewey Halford compiled an extraordinary career as an athlete, coach, and administrator. Halford played football, and basketball for Morningside, earning All-NCC honors as a halfback in 1940, and playing for long-time Maroons coach Jason Saunderson. Halford taught, and coached at Rock Rapids, and Sac City High Schools before being named as head football coach at Morningside in 1955.

He led the Chiefs for 19 seasons (1955-1973), and compiled a 73-92-3 overall record. His 1956 squad captured the NCC championship with a 6-1-1 record. Halford was named the NAIA National coach of the Year in 1956. Over the years, he coached 39 players who earned All-NCC honors, and four All-Americans. Halford served as commissioner of the North Central Conference from 1977-84.
