Bio

Bishop Heelan Catholic prep Leo Hupke graduated from Morningside in 1963, and played quarterback for the football team. He then embarked on an exceptional coaching career that spanned 55 years. Hupke had the good fortune early in his career to serve as an assistant football coach for both his high school coach (Don Fleming) at Heelan, and his college coach (Dewey Halford) at Morningside. At Heelan, Hupke also served as head baseball coach. In 1970, he was named head coach, and athletic director at Cherokee High School.

His 1972 Braves football squad went 9-0 during the regular season before falling to Harlan in the state playoffs. He was named Siouxland Football coach of the Year that season. Later in his career, he coached softball at Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn. Hupke was an honorary referee for the Sioux City Relays, the Cherokee Tomahawk Relays, and the Holstein Relays.
