Bio
Born in Ida Grove, Iowa, and raised in Worthing, S.D., Orval Madden played basketball for one of the Morningside’s most successful squads in 1938, and then went on to record a superb coaching career. The 1938 Maroons captured a North Central Conference title with a 14-5 overall mark, and 8-2 in league play.
As a coach, Madden achieved remarkable success on the hardwood and the diamond, ranking among Iowa’s top coaches in basketball, and baseball. He coached at Osage, Auburn, Little Rock, Granville Spaulding, and Floyd Valley of Alton, with the majority of his career spent at the latter. Madden charted a 511-323 record as a baseball coach, and a 434-234 mark as a basketball coach, including two state tournament appearances. In the classroom, Madden taught history, manual arts, mechanical drawing, physical education, and government. He also served as a principal, and athletic director. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame, the Iowa High School Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.
