An outstanding all-around athlete, Redfield, South Dakota, native Haven “Hoolie” Means excelled for the Maroons in football, basketball, and track, making his mark in each sport, and earning nine letters. On the gridiron, Means played end, and was named to the All-North Central Conference first team in 1925, and second team honors in 1927.
A basketball center, Means was named to the All-NCC team in 1926 as the Maroons captured a league title with a 10-3 record.
On the cinders, Means was a hurdler, and threw the discus. His 15.5 clocking in the 120-yard hurdles stood as a school record for many years.
