Most of Pickford’s career was spent at Fort Madison (Iowa) High School, where he charted a 200-74-2 overall record, including six undefeated seasons, and a record 42 consecutive dual victories.
Pickford is a member of the USA National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the Iowa High School Wrestling Coaches Association, and Fort Madison High School Hall of Fames, respectively. At Morningside, Pickford was named to the 1953 North Central Conference football team as a guard.
