Bio
Sergeant Bluff native Meryle Schafenberg was a standout half-miler for the Maroons, and later recorded a distinguished career as a high school basketball coach at Hinton. He was part of Morningside’s well-known two-mile relay unit that captured titles for several consecutive years with Schafenberg as anchor.
He also captained the basketball squad. Schafenberg compiled a 539-153 record as head basketball coach at Hinton, and is a member of the exclusive 500-win club for Iowa High School Boys Basketball. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1977.
