Bio
Leon “Shorty” Shortenhaus enrolled at Morningside College in 1946 to launch an association with his alma mater that lasted nearly seven decades. Shorty’s various roles as Morningside included student, athlete, staff, coach, booster, and volunteer. The Buffalo Center, Iowa, native played football under NFL coaching legend George Allen, and was named to the All-North Central Conference team as an end in 1949.
Decades later, Shorty was instrumental in bringing the “George Allen Classic” to Morningside, a special event that featured Coach Allen, his family, and former NFL players to showcase a Morningside football contest. George Allen Classic football contests were contested for a decade (1989-1998) with Morningside charting a 9-1 overall record in those games. Shortenhaus taught and coached high school football for several years, and served Morningside as assistant football coach, and associate director of Admissions.
He served as secretary of the M-Club for 17 years.
