Morningside Completes Sweep of Mount Mercy
OMAHA, Neb. – The Mustangs completed their first series sweep this weekend as Morningside picked up the final two games of the series with Mount Mercy, 5-4 and 3-1.

OMAHA, Neb. – The Mustangs completed their first series sweep this weekend as Morningside picked up the final two games of the series with Mount Mercy, 5-4 and 3-1.
Conner Maston got the start in Sunday's first contest, game no. 3 of the series, where he threw 4.1 scoreless innings with three hits and seven strikeouts. Sam Hanson gave up four runs on four hits, with three strikeouts, but secured the win as Morningside had run support behind the junior starter and senior reliever.
Morningside took a lead in the fourth inning of the contest, when discipline at the plate awarded Jacob O'Dell first base, allowing him to score off of a Hayden Hixon double to center field.
Mount Mercy tied the game in the sixth, but Morningside's Mustangs responded with four runs, starting with a Michael Delzell free base and an O'Dell home run. Luke Froehlich followed with a blast to center field, chasing the Mount Mercy pitcher from the contest.
Fresh from the pen, Mount Mercy gave up walks to Hixon and Nick Grajeda, allowing Dylan Conahan, who pinch ran for Hixon, to score on a Romani Perez single.
Mount Mercy got three runs back in the seventh, but a lineout to Mason King at second base ended the threat.
The series finale had a different look, as Kai Purdy-Burton threw six innings of one-run baseball, giving up four hits and recording four strikeouts. Zach Koelfgen came in for the final frame, recording a strikeout and collecting the save.
Morningside got on the board in the nightcap as King homered to left field in the second. It answered a Mount Mercy run with one of its own with a walk by Delzell, advancing on an O'Dell single and scoring on a throwing error.
Morningside scored on another error in the sixth as Jordan Rockwell pinch ran after an O'Dell walk, advancing to second on a ground ball, to third on an error, and scoring on a throwing error to give Morningside a 3-1 lead.
The Mustangs head to Baker University Feb. 21 and 22, playing both Baker and Graceland twice over the two day period.
