SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. — Michael Snyder wasn't afraid to swing for power Friday, and it paid off.
Snyder was one of five Morningside players to homer in Game 2 at Klasey Park, helping the Mustangs complete a two-game sweep of Dordt by scores of 10-9 and 14-3 in seven innings.
The final of those home runs came off Snyder's bat — a grand slam in the fifth inning that capped the Mustangs' offensive outburst.
"We have to put our foot on the gas, and that was exactly what we did," Snyder said. "If we keep hitting like that, we could make some noise in the GPAC. Games like this are helping us find out our potential."
Romani Perez hit two home runs in the nightcap, while Michael Delzell and Jacob O'Dell also went deep.
"It was just surreal," Snyder said. "I don't really do this often, and being able to do it today was spectacular."
Morningside led 9-0 through four innings in Game 2 and finished with 13 hits. Conner Maston, Perez, O'Dell, Delzell, and Snyder each recorded two hits in the win.
"It really came together in Game 2 with a lot of hard contact," head coach Adam Boeve said. "We had a lot of quality at-bats and did a great job picking each other up."
Kai Purdy-Burton matched the offensive effort on the mound, allowing two earned runs on nine hits over six innings. He struck out four and threw 75 pitches in the win.
Friday marked his third win of the season and the second time he's gone six innings.
"He really commanded well and stayed off their barrels," Boeve said. "The amount of weak contact was impressive. He had all his pitches working and pitched incredibly well."
Reid Nagel worked the seventh inning as the Mustangs secured the 10-run rule victory.
In Game 1, Morningside scored five runs in the second inning to set the tone for a 10-9 win. Hayden Hixon drew a bases-loaded walk, and Maston was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in runs.
Maston also hit a two-run homer during the first contest. The Mustangs also drew 10 walks in the opener, including four by Snyder.
Cade Nolan earned the win, allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Zach Neer got the save.
Morningside returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against Hastings at Klasey Park, then Tuesday against Dakota Wesleyan in a rain date makeup.
