SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Romani Perez delivered another big hit again on Sunday. Perez, a freshman, hit a go-ahead grand slam in the second inning of Game 2 that helped Morningside defeat Briar Cliff 7-5, and take three out of four over the Chargers on the weekend.
Perez's grand slam came on the first pitch of the at-bat, and he lifted the ball over the left field fence to give the Mustangs (29-12, 17-3 GPAC) a 6-2 lead at the time. Conner Maston, Kentaro Felton, and Jaxon Bunkers were the baserunners on Perez's slam.
That capped off a six-run inning for the Mustangs, which also saw a solo home run from Jacob O'Dell, and an RBI groundout from Michael Delzell. The Mustangs have scored 75 times during the second inning in 2026, the most among any inning.
O'Dell also homered during the eighth inning. The Mustangs had 10 hits in Game 2.
Zach Neer delivered his third win in relief this season, holding the Chargers to two earned runs on five hits over three innings. Sam Hanson got the save for the second time this weekend, as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
In Game 1, Briar Cliff held the Mustangs to three singles in a 7-0 loss.
