Senior Day dampened as Mustangs fall to Doane
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Morningside’s baseball team recognized 14 seniors Saturday in its regular-season finale, but dreary weather and two losses to No. 13 Doane put a damper on the afternoon.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Morningside's baseball team recognized 14 seniors Saturday in its regular-season finale, but dreary weather and two losses to No. 13 Doane put a damper on the afternoon.
The Mustangs honored Michael Delzell, Rhys Fairweather, Luke Froehlich, Nick Grajeda, Sam Hanson, Zach Koelfgen, Devan McGivern, Cade Nolan, Jacob O'Dell, Kai Purdy-Burton, Michael Snyder, Sam Wilt, Connor Woods, and Kade Yasui before the doubleheader.
"It has been such a privilege to coach this group of seniors," head coach Adam Boeve said. "These guys are a very special group who mean a lot to me. They have dedicated a lot of time and effort into their baseball and academic careers at Morningside, and they embody what our team is all about, and that is family.
"This group of seniors have made a tremendous impact on our baseball program," Boeve added. "I am extremely proud to see them graduating and preparing for the next phase of their lives, and excited to see what lies ahead for each of them."
In Game 1, Morningside battled throughout. O'Dell delivered a three-run home run, and Conner Maston later added an RBI infield single to give the Mustangs the lead. But Doane answered with two separate two-run home runs, edging Morningside 7-6. Sam Wilt also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. On the mound, Maston and Hanson combined for eight strikeouts.
The Mustangs jumped in front early in Game 2, building a five-run lead behind four home runs. Woods, Kentaro Felton, and Romani Perez each hit solo shots, and O'Dell added a two-run blast. Perez finished with three hits, while O'Dell and Felton each recorded two.
Purdy-Burton turned in a quality start in his regular-season finale, allowing two earned runs over six innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Despite the results, Morningside secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming GPAC Tournament, which begins Wednesday in Crete and Seward, Nebraska. The Mustangs will compete in the Concordia pod, with their opponent to be determined.
