HASTINGS, Neb. – A strong first half performance from the Morningside men's basketball team lifted the Mustangs to a 75-67 win over the Broncos.
The Mustangs opened an eight-point 37-29 first half lead thanks to 12 first-half points for Ely Doble and 10 from Aidan Vanderloo off the bench.
Defensively, Morningside held the Broncos to 37% from the floor and 27.3% from beyond the arc in the first half.
Both teams traded runs in the second half. Hastings tied the game at 52 nearly halfway through the second half, and led 67-65 with 4:49 to play. Morningside took the lead back, 69-67 with 2:48 to play and never looked back.
The Mustang defense stepped up again in the second half, as Hastings didn't score a point in the final 4:49 of the game.
A strong half half from Jack Dotzler was key for Morningside, and he finished with a team-high 18 points on the night. Doble contributed a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. Vanderloo added 12 points off the bench.
The Mustangs are back home Saturday, as Morningside hosts a doubleheader against Doane. The men are scheduled for a 3:45 p.m. start following the women's game.
