SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The Morningside men's basketball team had ground to make up in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings as Jamestown visited Allee Gymnasium tonight. The Mustangs, three games behind the Jimmies in the league standings with three games to play after the meeting, needed, and got, a win, setting aside the Jimmies 75-48.
Things looked bleak for Morningside early as Jamestown took a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of play. A pair of Joey Skoff free throws followed by a Jimmie time out was just what the doctor ordered, though, as Morningside went on a 27-0 run over the next almost 11 minutes, giving itself a cushion for the remainder of the contest.
The Mustangs shot 45.2 percent in the contest, with a 45.5 percent make-rate from three-point land. Jamestown, on the other hand, shot just over 29 percent, with almost an 18 percent rating from beyond the arc.
The two teams came up even in the rebounds column, each tallying 42, but Morningside had just eight turnovers, giving up five points, compared to Jamestown's 14 for 18 points.
Skoff and Ely Doble shared the lead for Morningside, with 16 points each. Aidan Vanderloo was the hot-shooter off the bench, going 5-for-11 for 13 points. Jack Dotzler had 12 points, and Trey Powers had seven. Brendan Buckley, Will Pottebaum, and Charlie Fletcher each had three points, while Justin Sitti rounded out the scoring column, with two.
Like the scoring totals, Skoff and Doble led the way in the rebounds column, with nine each. Powers had five, Vanderloo had four, and Dotzler, Buckley, and Dylan Johnson each had three. Pottebaum corralled two caroms, while Daniel Brocaille and Tyson Gordon each got in for one.
The Mustangs continue their postseason push tomorrow against Hastings, in a contest scheduled for a 3:45 p.m. tip in Allee Gym.
