No. 19 Morningside tripped by Broncos 85-83

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – In a battle until the final buzzer on senior day, No. 19 Morningside fell to Hastings 85-83 Saturday afternoon in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center and Allee Gymnasium.
A low possession first half turned into a barn-burner of a second half. Morningside led 33-28 at the intermission, but Hastings ended the half strong with a three-pointer from beyond halfcourt at the buzzer to cut the deficit to five.
Hastings outshot Morningside in the first half, hitting 50% of their shots compared to 46% for Morningside. The difference in the half came from Morningside's ability to sink five triples, while Hastings went 2-for-8.
Morningside opened up the second half on fire, stretching a five-point lead to 18 less than four minutes into the second half. The lead stayed above double digits until a Hastings three made it 61-54 with 9:27 to play. The lead shrunk to a possession with a three-pointer and free throw from a foul on the shot with 6:36 remaining. The Mustangs lead evaporated on another three-pointer from the Broncos, tying the game at 72 with 3:55 to play.
The Broncos were on fire in the second half, sinking 10 threes at a 67% efficiency. The two sides continued to trade baskets, but the final shot of the night didn't fall for the Mustangs.
The three senior players celebrated for senior day scored in double figures. Ely Doble poured in 24 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Jack Dotzler added 16 points and Aidan Vanderloo 11. The fourth member of the senior day celebration was student assistant Zach Olson.
Joey Skoff poured in 23 points to aid the cause for Morningside. Brendan Buckley had a team-high seven rebounds.
Morningside is back at home for the final time in the regular season Wednesday against Dakota Wesleyan. The game is scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m.
