SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Morningside University men's basketball senior Joey Skoff on Saturday became the all-time career scoring leader.
While the home crowd celebrated the feat shortly after it happened, Midland spoiled the fun by defeating the No. 14-ranked Mustangs 84-81 in Allee Gymnasium.
"It's a testament to the hard work he's put into his craft," said Mustangs head coach Trent Miller. "He has continually gotten better each and every season."
Skoff passed M-Club Hall of Famer Brad Schmit with a 17-point game, and now sits at 1,993 career points heading into Wednesday's home game against Dakota Wesleyan. Skoff eclipsed Schmit with a layup at the 17-minute, 5-second mark left in the game.
Skoff became the No. 2 scorer in program history last week, surpassing Danny Rudeen on the list.
"Both of those guys were so good offensively, but I think they both would respect his ability to find a bucket in a number of ways," Miller said. "I think what makes Joey so dynamic is his ability to score, whether it's in transition or in half court."
His first four points came off two dunks, and his lone 3-pointer in the contest came before the buzzer in the first half.
Morningside's largest lead was 10 points in two different instances in the second half, but the Warriors answered. When the Mustangs led 68-58 with about 10 minutes left, Midland responded with a 17-2 run.
The Mustangs had a chance to tie it at the end. The Mustangs took three 3-point attempts to try to send it to overtime, but those shots did not fall.
Daniel Brocaille led the Mustangs with 18 points, as he made four 3s. Aidan Vanderloo connected on three 3s en route to an 11-point game, and Brendan Buckley turned in a 13-point, nine-rebound game.
