Mustangs overpower No. 3 Red Raiders with 'complete' performance
The Mustangs defeated third-ranked Northwestern 106-89 in Orange City on Wednesday, making 60 percent of their shots and 44 percent from 3-point range.
ORANGE CITY, Iowa — The Morningside men's basketball team on Wednesday defeated third-ranked Northwestern 106-89 in Orange City, making 60 percent of their shots and 44 percent from 3-point range.
"That was the most complete 40-minute game we've played all season," said head coach Trent Miller on the KMNS-AM postgame show. "Everyone brought something to the table tonight. You have to be good to walk out of (the Bultman Center) with a win. Our guys fought and played for each other."
It's the second time this season Morningside has defeated a Top 10 team on the road.
Northwestern led by as many as nine points late in the first half, thanks to a 15-0 run. That was its largest lead, but the Mustangs needed less than three game minutes to erase it. All four shots made in that stretch came from beyond the arc. Daniel Brocaille made two of them, while Caleb Dreckman and Brendan Buckley connected one.
Morningside led by three points at the half, but went on a 21-8 run to start the half to extend the lead. During that run, the Mustangs made nine out of 14 shots, and three of those were 3s.
Alex Wilcoxson scored the 100th point with 1:14 remaining.
Morningside committed just four turnovers against a Red Raiders' team that averages its opponents to make 11 per game. It also scored 19 points off 12 Northwestern miscues.
"That set the tone," Miller said. "I thought we did a nice job of making them uncomfortable."
Six men reached double-digit scoring on Wednesday. Joey Skoff led the Mustangs with 29 points, as the program's all-time leading scorer made 11 attempts.
Brocaille had 16 points, while Justin Sitti chipped in with 13. Wilcoxson ended up with 12; Dreckman scored 10.
Buckley was busy on the floor. He dropped 11 points, dished out a team-high seven assists, and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Mustangs.
