RV Mustangs stay unbeaten at home
RV Morningside earned a 91-87 win over Concordia in front of an energetic crowd that gave the contest a tournament-like atmosphere.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Even on the first day of the spring semester, Wednesday night's game inside Allee Gym felt like one usually reserved for March.
RV Morningside earned a 91-87 win over Concordia in front of an energetic crowd that gave the contest a tournament-like atmosphere.
"It felt like a tournament game, and it was a very good environment," head coach Trent Miller said. "We're so spoiled — we have an awesome fan base. We're thrilled we were able to find 91 points. This will give us a ton of opportunities to grow and get better."
The win improved the Mustangs to 7-0 at home and gave them their eighth GPAC victory, but it did not come easily.

Concordia opened the game by hitting its first eight shots and built its largest lead of the night — eight points — late in the first half. The Bulldogs shot 59 percent overall and knocked down seven 3-pointers.
Morningside answered by matching Concordia with seven first-half 3s of its own, trailing 46-41 at halftime.
The second half featured back-and-forth play throughout. The Mustangs grabbed their first lead after the break on a Fitzy Grant layup with 13:30 remaining. From there, neither team led by more than four points until the final minutes.
Alex Wilcoxson drilled a corner 3-pointer in front of the student section with 1:48 left, giving Morningside an 84-83 edge. Concordia briefly regained the lead, but senior Caleb Dreckman delivered the biggest moment of the night with a conventional 3-point play at the 1:06 mark, driving the lane and converting through contact before sinking the free throw.
"Coach had the call on the sideline and wanted to get me a look," said Dreckman, who finished with 20 points. "I was glad I could make a play for my team. We wanted this win more, and we fed off the crowd."
Wilcoxson and Kaden Van Regenmorter each sealed the win by making two free throws in the final minute.
Morningside shot 19 of 28 (68 percent) in the second half and went 7-for-9 at the line. Five Mustangs connected on 3-pointers after halftime, and the team recorded 10 assists in the final 20 minutes.
Van Regenmorter also scored 20 points, Daniel Brocaille added 18 — including 13 in the first half — and Wilcoxson finished with 17.
"Kaden and Daniel hit big shots early and really kept us alive," Miller said. "The 18 assists to nine turnovers is where we have to live. When we share the ball, there's tremendous buy-in."
Grant chipped in six rebounds, three of them offensive.
Morningside heads back on the road Saturday at Hastings, followed by a Jan. 14 matchup at Dordt. The Mustangs return home Jan. 21 to face Dakota Wesleyan.
