SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Morningside men's basketball team added another milestone to an already successful season Wednesday night, using a 103-88 win over Dordt to clinch at least a share of the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular-season title.
Six Mustangs scored in double figures for the first time this season, underscoring the balance that has defined Morningside's run.
"I'm very proud of those guys," said head coach Trent Miller. "I thought we executed at a high level on both ends of the floor. I thought we played very selfless basketball. Multiple guys were stepping up and making plays. It's just been a group that's continued to be very coachable, that's come to work every day. We had some of our best practices this week, and I think it led to a good basketball game."
Caleb Dreckman led the sextet of double-figure scorers with 25 points, thanks to nine made shots and six free throws. He scored 15 during the second half.
The other five who scored at least 10-plus points were: Fitzy Grant (20), Alex Wilcoxson (18), Tyson Odvody (14), Daniel Brocaille (12 and Kaden Van Regenmorter (10). Grant had 14 points throughout the first half, while Wilcoxson had the most second-half points with 13.
While the Mustangs weren't as hot as they were in the second half Saturday, they were a 61-percent shooting team overall, including a 20-for-30 clip in the final 20 minutes.
"It was fun to watch those guys create for each other and finish plays," Miller said. "So if we're going to have a chance down the stretch, we have to continue to execute and take care of the basketball and take high percentage shots."
Morningside's largest lead was 21 points, and that came about five minutes into the second half. Morningside created separation early in the second half with an 7-0 run over a 66-second stretch, extending its lead to 60-42 and forcing a Dordt timeout.

Dordt reeled in its deficit to nine points late, but Morningside sank five straight shots and all free throws attempted in the final 4:27 to hold off the Defenders.
"They made some big shots and they kept coming, but our guys stayed the course and ultimately were able to finish the game," Miller said. "We have a ton of respect for them and we recognize this is a good win for us. We recognize it's still a very long season and there's a great opportunity for us to still get better."
Morningside hits the road for its next two games. The Mustangs will play at Concordia this Saturday at 6 p.m., then face Northwestern on Wed., Feb. 11.
The last two games on the GPAC slate are at home: Hastings (Feb. 14) and Briar Cliff (Feb. 21).
