Welford leads Mustangs to solid season opener

YANKTON, S.D. — The fall season for the Morningside University men's golf team started off strong with a team win Tuesday at the Mount Marty Invitational at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club.
The Mustangs 'A' team was the team medalist, finishing with a collective total of 585 strokes, good for nine-over par. It shot a 291 in the second round, three strokes better than Monday.
Morningside's 'B' squad was fifth at 602. Its score on Tuesday was 295.
Freshman Dylan Welford led the Mustangs to tie at third place, needing 145 strokes (+1) in 36 holes. He carded a 70 in his first collegiate 18-hole round, then went 75 on Tuesday. Welford had four birdies and an eagle on No. 17 during the final round.
Ryan Cavanaugh was tied for fifth (+3), scoring 147. He led off the second round with a birdie, and after that, he had three additional birdies and an eagle on No. 17.
Finn Coull placed in a three-way tie for eighth at 148 (+4). Tyler Show, Adam Watkin, Ariel Lev and Brock Lutterman each had scores of 150. Show was 2-under during the final round.
Darragh McGrath was tied for 26th (152), Owen Bruins T-35th (155), Phudit Amornjaturaporn T-44th (157), and Emil Hoffman T-51st (159).
