SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Mustangs men's soccer team battled both the heat and Bellevue Tuesday night in a 2-1 win over the Bruins.
As players began to wear down due to the warm conditions and competitive game, senior Gero Zarbo scored on a pass from senior John Coronado to give Morningside the 2-1 advantage in the 84th minute. The goal would be the difference maker, and give Morningside three straight wins over the Bruins.
In the first half, Morningside took the first lead of the match on a shot by senior Jona Fischer. Fischer's 12th minute goal was the lone goal of the half, until Bellevue evened the score less than a minute after the second water break of the half.
Officials called for water breaks every 15 minutes of gametime to keep the players as hydrated as possible. Shortly before the final water break, Morningside had a pair of opportunities sail just over the crossbar. The Mustangs carried that momentum through the final 15, scoring the game winner and kept the pressure on until the final whistle.
The Mustangs improve to 1-1-0 on the season and remain at home for their next match, hosting William Penn Tuesday afternoon.
