HILTON HEAD, S.C. – A pair of singles victories spotlighted the third day of Spring Break 2022 action for Morningside University Wednesday, March 9.
Battling Appalachian Athletic Conference member Milligan University, head coach Alex Struck's men's and women's squads saw freshmen Eduard Salvana (Calella, Spain) and Emma Dahlhoff (Vermillion, S.D.) pick up straight-set decisions. Salvana knocked the Buffaloes' Derian Janeke 6-4, 6-4 at number four on the men's side. Dahlhoff worked past MU's Hannah Nelson by similar set finals at number five for the women.
Morningside's women, dipping to 5-4, claimed the doubles point to start their clash. Junior Emily Clotfelter (Fairfield, Mt.) and senior Tenly Hansen (York, Neb.) were victors at number one. The junior duo of Aleks Sadowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Merel Kooij (Rockanje Zuid, Netherlands) added a triumph in the second slot. However, Milligan rallied with five of six singles victories.
The Mustangs men's squad dropped to 5-2 with a 6-1 defeat. Beyond Salvana's win, Struck's crew did get a number three doubles positive outcome, as sophomore Winyou Asavaruangchai (Udoni Thai, Thailand) and senior Gabe DeLeo (Corvallis, Mt.) won a thriller 7-6 with an 8-6 superbreak decider.
Morningside's spring trip continues Thursday, March 10, as the women face Thomas More College of Kentucky. The two teams wrap up their southern stay Friday, March 11, versus Lake Forest College of Illinois, a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III program.
