Mustangs take titles in all seven flights at GPAC Individual Tournament

LINCOLN, NEB. – Morningside had a strong showing at this year's Great Plains Athletic Conference Individual Tournament, taking the championship in all five flights of singles and both flights of doubles. 

Mathys Arnold came out on top in Flight 1 of Singles, coming back to defeat Concordia's Nick Velders 6-4 and 10-7 after falling behind 2-6 in the first set.

Arnold's doubles partner, Jesse Gerth, matched his teammate's feat in Flight 2, defeating teammate Gabriel Whiston 6-1 and 10-8 after Whiston won the opener 1-6. 

Abhishek Mohapatra took the title in the third flight via a walkover win over Andres Horobeanu. Mohapatra topped Concordia's Michael Bedrosian in the semifinals 6-3, 6-3.

It was another all Morningside championship in flight four, as Borja Vidal Ribas met Ruben Sanchez Gutierrez in the finale. Vidal Ribas came out on top, winning 6-2, 6-1.

Teammates Adrien Diaz and Chris Wailes collided in the Flight 5 championship, where Diaz picked up the win 8-3.

In doubles, Arnold and Gerth knocked off Whiston and Santiago Minetti 6-1 in the semifinals of Flight 1 before falling to Alexis Diaz and Marcos Menendez Hervella 6-4 in the championship.

The championship of Flight 2 of doubles saw Joao Pedro Pierry Izoldi Costa and Thomas Purrer win 6-3 over Northwestern's Arthur Vincente and Samy Khiyara.

Morningside heads to Kansas next week to compete in the ITA's regional tournament Friday, Sept. 26-Sunday Sept. 28.
