SIOUX CENTER, IOWA – Morningside's track and field season continues to creep closer to its conclusion as the men competed in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Dordt University this weekend. The Mustangs placed eighth in the event as a team, with Austin Freiberg taking Morningside's lone conference title and four individuals placing in the top eight to earn all-conference honors.
Freiberg finished in the top spot in Friday's 110-meter hurdle prelims, repeating the effort in the finals and cutting his time to 14.34 seconds. His mark is well under the auto-qualifying standard for the 2023 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Ashton Banker placed fourth in the 200-meter dash, turning in a time of 21.68 seconds. He also placed sixth in the 100-meter dash, running the straightaway in 10.88 seconds.
David Hernandez took third in the 400-meter hurdles, running the obstacle-laden lap in 54.88 seconds.
Morningside's 4x400 team just missed the all-conference mark as Banker, Hernandez, Davon Brees, and Kadyn Cline took fourth place with a time of 3:20.76. Banker, Freiberg, Jared Nicholas, and Davon Brees placed fifth in the 4x100-meter relay, turning in a 41.89 second lap.
The Mustangs will send runners to Friday's Concordia Twilight Meet, hoping to add to and improve the list of times that have already qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
