Mustangs hope to 'dial in' during nationals

MARION, Ind. — The Morningside men's 400-meter relay team has felt dialed in throughout the whole track and field season.
Two months ago, the Mustangs ran a time of 41.14 seconds that met the NAIA 'B' Standard. The Mustangs will race in the 4x100 prelims at 2:30 p.m. (Iowa time) Wednesday at the NAIA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.
Recently at the Great Plains Athletic Conference meet, the quartet of Lane Kruger, Kumunule Gbaley, Leighton Olesen, and Theo Moseman got fourth with a time of 41.31 seconds. Those four have learned that success takes more than just speed. Jaydon Moore is listed as the alternate.
"Our guys have a lot of potential," said head coach Frank Wallace. "The group that we have here, it's a group that's earned it. We have to be precise with handoffs. We have to be crisp."
The Mustangs this week in Indiana have been fine-tuning their handoffs before the race, and making sure the little things are handled. That's been an exercise they also practice twice-weekly during the season.
"It feels really good to be national qualifiers," Kruger said. "When we all made it, we were all stoked about it. It was great. Now the time's come and we're just going to go out there and run."
