Morningside stayed within striking distance during several stretches of the match. In the opening set, the Mustangs kept the deficit within four late before William Penn closed it out. The second set saw Morningside jump out to a quick 3-0 lead before the Statesmen answered with a run of their own.
Alves hit .333 throughout the match, while also collecting five digs. Mohamed Benkrid chipped in with nine kills, while Fernando Vinti had five.
Malu Wilcox had a team-high 20 assists, while Jarrick Bagaoisan had 13. Bagaoisan also recorded the Mustangs' lone service ace against the Statesmen.
Tucker Juhnke had 10 digs, followed by Mauro Verstaeten's six.
Morningside hit .230 with 39 kills.
The Mustangs are back home next weekend with a Friday match against Culver-Stockton, then a Saturday meeting against No. 5 Missouri Valley.
