Fast start allows Mside to overwhelm Concordia

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside University's 2021-22 overall and Great Plains Athletic Conference opener turned on the first six matches Wednesday, Dec. 1.

Head coach Jake Stevenson's Mustangs captured a pair of bonus-point victories from sophomore 125-pounder Benjamin Schmitz (Mt. Carmel, Iowa) and junior 141-pounder Noah Styskal (David City, Neb.) to propel them to an insurmountable 20-0 advantage with junior 133-pounder Taylor Vasquez (Fountain, Colo.), junior 149-pounder John Diener (Kaukauna, Wis.), sophomore 157-pounder Caleb Connor (Papillion, Neb.) and sophomore 165-pounder Ethan Hatcher (Wildwood, Fla.) chipping in decisions.

Concordia did manage to win two of the final four bouts with a decision and pin. Morningside added decision victories from senior 184-pounder Brody Kacmarynski (Spencer, Iowa) and sophomore 197-pounder Kasten Grape (Columbus, Neb.) to complete the 27-9 team triumph as part of the 2021-22 GPAC Duals I at the Arena Sports Academy.

Mside resumes a busy span Saturday, Dec. 4. They join the field for Doane University's Connor/Oppenheimer Open at the George and Sally Haddix Recreation Center in Crete, Neb.
