OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The last run-producing hit for the Morningside softball team on Tuesday ended up being the crucial one.
Mackenzi Harrel hit a grand slam in the fourth inning in an 8-4 win over William Carey to keep the Mustangs' season alive in the NAIA Opening Round.
Harrel's home run came with no outs in the inning. Three straight singles from Addyson Maxell, Paige Schuster, and Jalyn Noelle set up Harrel for her homer.
The Mustangs (35-18) also scored four times during the third inning. Harrel scored Schuster on an RBI double, while Jenna Skradski, Ellie Gengler, and Morgan Secora each collected a double for scoring plays.
The Mustangs had 13 hits against William Carey, and they went 6-for-11 with runners in scoring position. They also successfully advanced runners 10 times in the win.
Skradski was 3-for-4 with that double in the third. Harrel, Gengler, and Maxell each had a two-hit game.
Secora also pitched for the Mustangs in the elimination game. She went all seven innings, needing 122 pitches to get to the end. She struck out four and didn't walk a batter. She allowed three earned runs off six hits.
Morningside will play at 1 p.m. Wednesday against Oklahoma City in another elimination game.
