SIOUX CITY, Iowa – After a week of delays due to uncooperative weather, Morningside opened the Jensen Softball Complex today, with the thermometer breaking 80 degrees under partly cloudy skies. The Mustangs seized the opportunity, picking up a pair of conference wins over Briar Cliff, 1-0 and 9-4.
The Mustangs got the lone run in the opener, as Amber Dougherty put a ball on the ground in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring in pinch runner Ali Fletcher, who represented the winning run. Fletcher subbed for Josie Hernandez, who coaxed a walk to start the inning. An Emma Barwick double put her on third base, where Dougherty was able to bring her across.
Adeline Fliege was the winning pitcher in the contest, surrendering just two hits and walking two batters in the complete-game effort.
Bralen Biddlecome got the start in game two, throwing four innings with three unearned runs, four hits, and a strikeout. Morgan Secora made an appearance in relief, giving up Morningside's lone earned run with one hit, two walks, and four strikeouts as she collected a three-inning save.
Biddlecome added three RBIs to her season total as the offensive taps opened, while Jenna Skradski and Fliege added two apiece and Barwick and Paige Schuster each had one.
Morningside returns to the Jensen Softball Complex tomorrow, when Doane comes to town for a 1 p.m. Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader.
