CHICKASHA, Okla. — The Morningside softball team opened up national tournament play Monday with a dramatic win.
Morningside defeated Friends in the NAIA Opening Round lid-lifter with a 1-0 walk-off victory to move to the winner's bracket. Jenna Skradski drove in Ali Fletcher with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the win.
Bralen Biddlecome reached base on a throwing error, then advanced to second, setting up the go-ahead run. Mustangs coach Brooke Pruner then brought in Fletcher as a pinch runner.
Then, Ashlyn Caniglia singled through the left side, moving Fletcher to third. Skradski — the Mustangs' sixth hitter in the lineup — shot the gap in right center field. That allowed Fletcher to score uncontested, and clinch a win to the winner's bracket.
Adeline Fliege earned the win in the circle, needing 122 pitches through seven innings. She held Friends to five hits, and struck out six hitters.
In Game 2, host University of Sciences and Arts of Oklahoma topped the Mustangs, 9-1. The Mustangs' lone run there came on a Jalyn Noelle RBI groundout that scored Emma Barwick.
Barwick and Caniglia each had a double in the loss.
With the loss Monday evening, Morningside will play an elimination game at 6 p.m. Tuesday against the winner between Friends and LSU Alexandria. College of Idaho won the other game Monday over LSU Alexandria, 7-4.
