Late run keeps Mustangs unbeaten in GPAC action
FREMONT, NEB. – Morningside College scored 17 of the final 24 points in a white-knuckle ride Great Plains Athletic Conference battle Saturday, Dec. 5.
That roll by head coach Jamie Sale's Mustangs managed to keep the league leaders unbeaten in conference action. The final 5:42 surge closed out a contest inside Midland University's Wikert Events Center that featured each side earning the lead five times and advantages of at least three points over 40 minutes.
A balanced scoring attack aided Morningside's move to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the GPAC. Senior guard Sierra Mitchell (SR/Pleasant Hill, Iowa) (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) closed within five of joining the program's all-time top 10, tallying 26 points behind four three-point buckets and 10 total made field goals. The scoring total was just part of her story, though, as she added five rebounds, three steals, an assist, and a blocked shot. Junior forward Sophia Peppers (JR/Exira, Iowa) (Exira, Iowa) reeled off her third straight 20-point-plus outing, turning in 21 to go with eight rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and a blocked shot. Freshman post player Chloe Lofstrom (FR/Armstrong, Iowa) (Armstrong, Iowa) and senior guard Faith Meyer (SR/Pomeroy, Iowa) (Pomeroy, Iowa) added their names to the Mustangs' double-digit point registry. Lofstrom ended with 14 to go with seven rebounds, and Meyer tallied 10 points and picked up four steals.
Morningside concludes a brief two-game road trip Wednesday, Dec. 9. They take on crosstown rival Briar Cliff University in a 6 p.m. tip-off at BCU's Newman Flanagan Center.
