A 22-3 second quarter proved to be the difference in the game. The two squads were tied at 17 after a quarter, but the big second quarter push from the Mustangs gave them a 19-point cushion at the half.
Bethany wasn't able to chip away much of the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs by two, but a strong finish to the game from Morningside extended their advantage.
Three Mustangs scored in double figures and two of them came off the bench to do so. Lily Vollertsen tallied 14 points and eight rebounds for Morningside in the win. Chloe Lofstrom was the lone starter in double figures scoring, totaling 11 points and nine rebounds. Lofstrom passed 1,000 career points in Friday's season opener against Kansas Wesleyan.
Jordyn Carr added 10 points off the bench. Sixteen Mustangs saw the floor in the win, and only two of them played more than half of the game.
The Mustangs play their third game in five days Tuesday when they hit the court against Grand View in Des Moines. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
