Third quarter outburst lifts Mustangs past Midland
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Mustangs overcame a two-point halftime deficit and rolled to a third straight GPAC victory with a 70-54 win over Midland Saturday afternoon in the friendly confines of the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center and Allee Gymnasium.

Midland went on a 13-0 run in the second quarter to take the lead from the Mustangs and held onto the advantage to lead 29-27 at the half. Lily Vollertsen totaled 10 points in the first half off the bench to keep Morningside in the game.
The third quarter was the difference in the game, as Morningside outscored Midland 26-9, in large part to nine points on 3-of-4 shooting for Alexis Spier in the quarter. The Mustangs also forced 10 Warrior turnovers in the quarter and committed just one turnover themselves.
While Morningside wasn't able to force Midland into multiple turnovers in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs were able to sustain their advantage and grew it by a point to seal the 16-point win.
Vollertsen scored a game-high 16 points and added six rebounds off the bench for Morningside. Spier contributed 13 points and seven boards and Lofstrom pitched in 12 points and seven rebounds. Jordyn Carr had four assists and four steals. Morningside played 10 players, and no one played more than 25 minutes in the win.
Morningside has nearly one month before its next conference game on Jan. 6 against Hastings. The Mustangs, now 7-4 overall and 4-3 in conference, play one non-conference game between now and the new year, taking on Dakota State in Madison, S.D. on December 18.
