SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside's women's basketball team was looking for a crucial insurance win as College of Saint Mary visited Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center. The Mustangs were able to come away with an 85-62 win and crucially improve their position in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings as the final stretch of the season nears.
Morningside's season sweep of the Flames didn't come easy, with the visitors pairing a 40 percent field goal percentage with four blocked shots and 10 steals, but the Mustangs were able to open up an 18-9 lead by the first break and continue to grow it in each period.
Lily Vollertsen led the Mustangs offensively, pairing 14 points on the floor with a 3-for-3 effort at the free throw line for a game-leading 17 points. Jaeden Webb followed with 12, and Chaise Pfanstiel and Jordyn Carr each had 10. Sam Ehlers had eight points, Chloe Lofstrom had seven, Alexis Spier had six, and Tonja Heirigs had five. Vollertsen, Pfanstiel, and Heirigs' efforts were part of 46 points from coach Jamie Sale's bench. Spier found teammates with open scoring opportunities for a game-high nine assists.
Vollertsen also had a big night on the glass, collecting six rebounds to lead the Mustangs. Lofstrom and Ella Wragge had five, and Ehlers and Pfanstiel had four.
Morningside is home again on January 31, playing Concordia at 6 p.m.
