SIOUX CITY, Iowa – As the Mustangs continue to battle for position in the GPAC standings, they took down receiving votes Dakota Wesleyan 72-61 Wednesday night inside Allee Gym and the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
The Mustangs took the lead from the jump, scoring the first two baskets of the game and never looking back. A Lily Vollertsen lay-up with under five minutes to play in the first quarter gave Morningside its first double digit lead of the game, 15-4.
It was nearly a quarter of play later the next time the Tigers were within single digits. The lead dwindled to seven with 4:59 to go until halftime. Vollertsen stepped up and converted back-to-back baskets to get the lead back to double digits at 11. Alexis Spier, who led the Mustangs with 14 first-half points, made a layup with five seconds left to make it 41-24 Morningside at the half.
The Mustangs stretched the lead to 20 before the Tigers started to chip away at the lead. While Dakota Wesleyan never cut the lead to single digits, the Tigers hung around for the entirety of the game, forcing Morningside to keep their foot on the pedal until the final seconds.
Alexis Spier tallied 17 points in the win for the Mustangs. Sam Ehlers was the second Mustang in double figures, tallying 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Ella Wragge added eight points and eight rebounds to the cause. Chloe Lofstrom added six points, six assists, and five rebounds.
The Mustangs are on the road for the remainder of the regular season, playing three games away from Allee Gymnasium hoping to better their positioning in the GPAC standings. Morningside is now tied with Jamestown at Northwestern for fifth in the conference at 11-8. Two teams are tied for eighth at 9-10 and Briar Cliff sits fourth at 12-7.
Morningside is back in action Saturday at Doane at 2 p.m.
