YANKTON, S.D. — Morningside returned to GPAC play Saturday afternoon and battled throughout, but Mount Marty defeated the Mustangs, 67-58.
Clancy Brown paced the Mustangs with 11 points, connecting on one of Morningside's four 3-pointers. Annie Harms, Jaeden Webb and Dani Peterson also knocked down shots from beyond the arc.
The opening half featured plenty of back-and-forth action, with neither team able to create much separation early. Mount Marty used a brief 7-0 run during the second and third quarters to gain the advantage and maintained its lead the rest of the way.
Lily Vollertsen turned in another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Mustangs showed persistence on the glass, finishing with 40 rebounds and a 10-3 edge in second-chance points.
Morningside also found success inside, outscoring the Lancers 32-28 in the paint, but struggled to find a consistent shooting rhythm overall.
The Mustangs will look to regroup quickly as GPAC play continues Wednesday at home against Concordia.
"All we can do is prepare for the next team, and Concordia is going to be another challenge," said head coach Jamie Sale on the KMNS-AM postgame show. "We just have to play together, and we have to figure out ways to be able to score."
