SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Confidence can be contagious, and this week, the Morningside women's basketball team caught plenty of it with another convincing win.
The Mustangs defeated Midland 97-40 on Saturday in Allee Gymnasium, marking the second straight win of 30-plus points and the third of that variety this month.
"Even though we've struggled, they haven't given up and they've still been working hard," head coach Jamie Sale said. "We feel like there are still some good things that we can accomplish."
Morningside led wire-to-wire throughout the game, and led by as many as 59 points. It created the distance needed with a 16-0 first quarter run that gave the Mustangs a 20-point lead at that point.
During that run, Morningside connected on four layups and 3-pointers from Ali Albrecht and Jordyn Carr.
"We're playing together, and moving the ball well," Sale said. "I think over the last couple of weeks the girls have taken to heart, and I've seen in practice they've really tried getting a teammate open."
Defensively, the Mustangs held the Warriors to single-digit quarters during the second and third quarters. They also forced 28 turnovers, including nine during the first quarter.
Three different starters scored double-digit points: Jaeden Webb with 14 points, Sam Ehlers 13 and Lily Vollertsen 12. Ehlers also had 11 rebounds. Off the bench, Kinsey Hall scored 10 during 12 minutes.
Morningside's next game is at 6 p.m. Wednesday when top-ranked Dordt plays a women's/men's doubleheader in Allee Gym.
