Strong third quarter not enough for Mustangs

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Despite a productive third quarter, the Morningside women's basketball team fell 71-59 to Northwestern on Wednesday in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.
Morningside shot 67 percent in the third period, en route to a 25-point quarter, going on a 19-10 over the remaining 6 minutes, 40 seconds. Jaeden Webb and Lily Vollertsen each hit 3-pointers that helped chip away at the deficit. Vollertsen made the next two baskets, while Jordyn Carr made a layup. Kinsey Hall scored five straight points during that run, too.
Webb and Vollertsen each scored seven during the third quarter scamper.
Vollertsen led Morningside with 20 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Webb and Clancy Brown each contributed 10 points, while Sam Ehlers added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Morningside finished at 36 percent from the floor. The Mustangs also forced 17 turnovers on the Red Raiders, and scored 18 off those miscues.
The Mustangs return home Saturday to face Hastings at 2 p.m. inside the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
