SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Morningside women's basketball team played a hard-fought season finale Saturday, as the Mustangs fell 105-99 to Briar Cliff on Senior Day in Allee Gymnasium.
Morningside had a strong first half that allowed it to get a nine-point halftime lead on the Chargers. It scored 33 points during the second quarter, making 12 of 18 shots.
Lily Vollertsen — one of five Morningside seniors honored Saturday — bookended the second quarter with jump shots made. She scored 12 points alone in the quarter, as she led the Mustangs with 28 points and 21 rebounds.
Vollertsen was one of five seniors who were honored on Senior Day. The other four were Jordyn Carr, Kinsey Hall, Dani Peterson, and Ella Wragge. Hall scored 13 points, while Carr had five assists.
Morningside trailed by four with 67 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but refused to give up in its final game of the season.
Peterson got an offensive rebound, got fouled and made both her free-throw attempts. After getting a defensive stop with a Hall rebound, Annie Harms made two free throws after she drove to the baseline.
Vollertsen made a layup to put the first points on the board in overtime, but Briar Cliff hit a 3-pointer and pulled away from there.
"I'm proud of our team for how they kept fighting," said head coach Jamie Sale on the KMNS-AM postgame show. "They came out and played their hardest. I wish we could have given the seniors a win, but they gave everything they had."
Morningside won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Chargers 58-38. The Mustangs also had more points in the paint (38) and bench points (34).
Jaeden Webb hit two 3-pointers en route to a 12-point game, while Sam Ehlers had 11.
Morningside ends the season with a 13-15 overall record. The Mustangs will open up the 2026-27 season in the late fall.
