The new best-of-three format is intended to isolate the best all-around bowling team, combining a team game round of combined individual scores, a five-game baker set, with a best-of-seven game baker set as the tiebreaker.
The Mustangs took their opening quarterfinal match in the first two rounds, defeating College of Saint Mary 835-815 in individual totals and 874-764 in the baker set.
Morningside upped its scores in the semifinal round, defeating McPherson 895-848 and 932-808.
The Mustangs fell behind against Ottawa, losing the team game 928-879. Morningside bounced back with a 968-902 five-game baker set, winning the best-of tiebreaker set 4-3.
