Coelho, Mahoney pace Mustangs in GPAC Invitational

SIOUX CITY, IOWA — The Mustang women placed third in their season debut today, with 317 points in the GPAC Invitational. College of Saint Mary won the meet with 684 points, while Dordt University finished second with 401.
Freshman Leonor Coelho led the Mustangs with multiple podium finishes. She captured the 200 freestyle title in 2:05.08, placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.69 seconds, and added a victory in the 100-yard freestyle at 56.88 seconds to set a new meet record.
The Mustangs opened the meet with a runner-up finish in the 200 medley relay, as Elena Santelli, Alice Mahoney, Lily Schwickerath, and Coelho combined for a time of 2:01.17. They later placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking 1:52.81 with swims from Schwickerath, Delaney Biesecker, Lily Jackson, and Santelli.
Mahoney chipped in key points with a second-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle and a win in the 100 breaststroke at 1:15.37. Santelli was among the team's top backstrokers, finishing second in the 50-yard backstroke in 31.32 seconds and third in the 100 back in 1:07.89.
Morningside is back in the pool as part of homecoming weekend, competing in a dual with Dordt on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. in the Hindman-Hobbs Center.
