SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The Mustangs picked up their first Great Plains Athletic Conference women's volleyball win in impressive fashion, collecting a straight-sets sweep over Briar Cliff University. Morningside's victory in the crosstown clash came courtesy of scores of 25-20, 25-15, and 25-18.
The Morningside team that took the floor against the Chargers was one that had a different swagger than the week prior, seeming to be better connected than the previous outing in Allee.
"Tonight was a step forward in our pride and confidence. We can feel the snowball building, so hopefully we get over a good hill and roll over anything that gets in our way," equated head coach Jessica Squier.
Morningside's offense hit at a .220 percentage, recording 50 kills. Payten Lode led the Mustangs for the second time in Allee Gym, recording 16 kills. Sydney Marlow and Claire Wilson followed, with 11 kills each. Gillian DePauw and Bridget Smith split setting duties, with 27 and 13 assists, respectively.
"It was fun seeing Payten and Claire get a hold of balls tonight," said Squier. "Getting those two going takes a load off of Sydney."
The defense was led by Aureana Bernales, with 24 digs. Payton Shoquist followed with 17, Emerson Smith recorded 13, and Marlow had 10. Kylah Brewer championed the defensive front, getting a hand in for each of Morningside's three blocks. Wilson also recorded two block assists.
Morningside is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Jamestown for a 1:30 p.m. JV match. Varsity is scheduled to follow at 3 p.m.
