Mustangs pick up pair of wins over Doane, Avila
SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside may not have had any gridiron action this week, but Allee Gym was bustling as the Mustangs hosted a women’s volleyball triangular with Doane and Avila. The Mustangs bested both opponents 3-1, with the win over Doane coming 25-18, 22-25, 25-15, and 25-21, and the victory over Avila 21-25, 26-24, 25-16, and 25-18.

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside may not have had any gridiron action this week, but Allee Gym was bustling as the Mustangs hosted a women's volleyball triangular with Doane and Avila. The Mustangs bested both opponents 3-1, with the win over Doane coming 25-18, 22-25, 25-15, and 25-21, and the victory over Avila 21-25, 26-24, 25-16, and 25-18.
The conference win for the Mustangs saw three players terminate double-digit points, with Sydney Marlow taking the lead at 18 kills. Claire Wilson followed with 16 and Payten Lode recorded 14. Morningside's 62 kills came on 57 assists, with 47 credited to Gillian DePauw.
The Mustang defense was heavy in the digs column, as usual, with 92 in the four-setter. Aureana Bernales led the way with 27, followed by Marlow with 19, Payton Shoquist with 14, and Wilson, with 12. Up front, Morningside recorded seven blocks, championed by Kylah Brewer, with 4.
In the day's concluding match, the Mustangs had five blocks, led by Brewer's three and DePauw's two. Marlow was the foreman of the mining crew, with 15 digs, followed by Bernales with 13, Shoquist with 12, and Tarah Jackson with 9.
Marlow continued to be a threat up front, with 16 kills. Wilson added 11, Lode 9, and Brewer 4 on the way to 54 kills. DePauw was credited with 41 assists in the match.
Morningside, advancing to 6-13 and 2-4 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, is at no. 1 Midland on Friday, Sept. 30, with JV scheduled for 6 p.m. and varsity to follow at 7:30.
