Mustangs battle back on Senior Day
After dropping the first set, Morningside (21-9, 9-6 GPAC) won the following three to beat the Tigers by set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-17, and 25-22.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Dakota Wesleyan thought it had plans to ruin Senior Day for the Morningside University women's volleyball team. The Mustangs had different thoughts in sets two, three, and four.
After dropping the first set, Morningside (21-9, 9-6 GPAC) won the following three to beat the Tigers by set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-17, and 25-22.
In the second set, the Mustangs' biggest lead was 17-9, but the Tigers brought it back to within three points late in the set. Sydney Marlow and Nienke van Drunen recorded kills that brought the lead back up to five. Payten Lode and van Drunen teamed up to block the ball at the net.
The largest lead in set No. 3 was also eight at the end of the stanza. Marlow had a kill, assisted by Dalach. Morningside hit .366 in that set, and only had five errors.
Morningside led 17-8 in set four, as Marlow had four kills in that stretch. She also had the match-clinching kill, again assisted by Dalach.
Lode led the Mustangs with 18 kills, while also having two service aces. Marlow and Claire Wilson both had 15 kills. Wilson hit .364 in her final home regular-season match.
Dalach had 51 of the team's 61 assists.
Aureana Bernales and Barbora Kozouskova earned two aces in the win.
Defensively, Bernales had a match-high 19 digs, while Lode had 14 and Taya Phillips had 10.
There were many seniors honored on Senior Day, including three student coaches. Those recognized were: Lauryn Bonar, Ellie Woelber, Cassie McDermott, Bernales, Gillian DePauw, Kozouskova, Marlow, van Drunen, Emerson Smith, and Wilson.
