SIOUX CITY, Iowa — When Payten Lode first joined the Morningside volleyball program, she quickly learned that the college game was a step up from her days at Sheldon High School.
Lode adapted fast. On Saturday, she eclipsed 1,000 career kills during a three-set loss to third-ranked Northwestern. While the milestone marked a major personal achievement, Lode said it isn't what matters most.
"I care more about the memories I make and the wins we get as a team," Lode said. "This milestone is a fun thing to look back on and something I can tell my kids someday."
Lode led the Mustangs with 14 kills and hit .362 in the match. She also surpassed 1,000 kills in high school.
"My dad helped me keep track, and he let me know how close I was," she said. "Coming to the college level, I quickly realized how different it was — and a lot more challenging — so I feel a lot more accomplished."
Morningside battled with Northwestern in all three sets, which the Red Raiders won 28-26, 25-22 and 25-21. After trailing 7-1 early in the opener, the Mustangs rallied to tie it at 22 before Northwestern closed it out with three of the final four points.
Emma Haren recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Kyla Dyrstad led with 31 assists, and Aubrey Sandbothe tallied a team-high 23 digs. Lode also had Morningside's lone solo block.
The Mustangs close the regular season Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. when they host Dordt in Allee Gymnasium.
"We're focused on being consistent so we can have a good head on our shoulders," Lode said. "We need to have a good mindset in practice this week."
