FORT VANCOUVER, WASH. – A journey that took Morningside University to five top-five team finishes featuring a runner-up effort at their home meet in late September and a third-place mark at the 2021 Great Plains Athletic Conference meet less than two weeks prior wound up on the biggest stage for three Mustangs Friday, Nov. 19.
A senior trio of Emalee Fundermann (Anthon, Iowa), Kristine Honomichl (Westminster, Colo.), and Jo McKibben (Mapleton, Iowa) represented Mside at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Championships. Honomichl and McKibben crossed the finish line in career personal-best national meet marks at the Fort Vancouver Historical Site course. McKibben ended 162nd with a time of 20:03.8, and Honomichl was only eight spots behind her teammate, taking 170th (20:08). Fundermann added a third best 200 effort for head coach Dave Nash's program, winding up 190th (20:22.5).
"I am very proud of these three," Nash said. "They started much slower than the plan and, despite moving up over 100 places, it was just too far back to hit their goals."
"Overall though, a great way for each of them to end the year – racing at the national championships," he added.
