ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Early offense powered Morningside to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Northwestern on Wednesday in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.
The Mustangs scored twice in the first half and held off a late charge to earn their eighth win of the season. Tuva Hammarlund opened the scoring in the 16th minute, converting a penalty kick for her fifth goal of the year. Keyera Harmon added to the lead 13 minutes later, netting her team-best seventh goal to make it 2-0.
Northwestern pulled one back in the 74th minute, but Morningside's defense stayed firm the rest of the way. Goalkeeper Moriah Dixson made three saves, while the Mustangs outshot the Red Raiders 27-5 and earned three corner kicks.
