SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. – Morningside Women's Tennis took advantage of strength in numbers this morning, as the Mustangs easily defeated a shorthanded Ottawa team, 7-0.
The Mustangs' advantage became clear as they started doubles play with the no. 3 match already in the bag, as Jennifer Hubert and Grace Riha picked up the win via forfeit. Kailee Bailey and Sophia Guntren would clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win at no. 2, and Lara Heinrich and Helene Kreibich took the no. 1 win, 6-2.
With the doubles point in hand and a pair of singles forfeits for Guntren and Ellie Peterson, Morningside only needed to win one more match to walk away with the victory. Line Jensen would deliver that victory in unexpected fashion, as she led 1-0 when her match was retired.
That wasn't enough for the Mustangs, though, as Jil Exelmans won the no. 3 match 6-1, 6-1. Stefany Simplicio took the no. 4 match 6-0, 6-0, and Brooke Marshall won at no. 2 6-1, 6-1.
Morningside's schedule goes quiet until March, when the Mustangs play five matches in as many days on their spring break trip.
